I'd like to make good use of the beginning of Autumn (in southern hemisphere) to present a Project which I've been working in for two years.

Well, to be honest I didn't know where to start this project of mine; not because of it is something innovative or complex, it's because I'm kind of rusty on presenting this kind of matter/thing. (I used to do it more often when  I studied Graphic Design). I tend to wander off, so I'll try to be brief and concise.


More than three years ago, I came up with the idea of going from café to café to drink coffee and draw. After that, I documented what I ordered for drinking and took a photography of what I sketched in a serviette or paper napkin.

Why serviettes? Because in all the cafés, there're a lot of serviettes (aka: plenty of  free paper ). However, I actually chose them because I liked how the ink from a Fine Point Sharpie worked on the absorbent surface of high capillarity that all serviettes have.

At the beginning, I started with a black marker and gradually I was getting involved with an aspect that I always avoided when it comes to draw: color.

I can be very dedicated and patient with my drawings as far as lines and crosshatching is concerned, but as for coloring, it's hard for me to wait and see the results. If it was up to me, I'd have liked to snap my fingers and see my drawing completely colored. Evidently, I didn't enjoy much of the process of adding color, and because of that, painting with color pencils, pastels, acrylics and other pigments didn't go very well with my "chromatic impatience"; I consider myself more of a draftman than a painter. The use of Sharpies allowed me to draw and color at the same time, and the serviettes as canvas accentuated the hues and the pigmentation that easily expanded due to principle of capillarity. Simultaneously, It ended up with an interesting base texture. Later, I started learning and playing with that aspect.

Besides of satisfying my addiction to caffeine and using all of serviettes from the bars, I explored an aspect on which I've already shown my interest: the copyrights and the possibility of an artist to let go of its work completely. And I discovered that it is so simple as leaving a drawn serviette in the table of a bar.
At the beginning I had to deal a little with the fact of knowing that, when I started to draw, I couldn't keep the drawing with me, and that perhaps it's expressed in the simplicity of the first serviettes.

Why trying so much in a drawing which I will "forsake" later on? In the process of the project, I was assimilating that the "forsake" of the drawing wasn't implying loving less my work or not giving it enough time and dedication. In fact, a friend of mine made me notice that my drawings represented so much for me because of organizing all this "ceremony" of coffee around them. As a result, you'll appreciate an illustrative evolution between the first serviettes and later ones.

In order to finish this short introduction, I'd like to add that this project is also a tribute of sorts to Crist, a great artist from my city. I learnt a lot thanks to him during his seminars. He had the same penchant for going to bars, sitting down and just drawing on paper napkins, a habit he shared with many other artists from his generation.

En Castellano

Quisiera aprovechar el comienzo del otoño para presentar un proyecto en el cual he estado trabajando los últimos 2 años.

Bueno, la verdad es que no sabía por donde empezar a presentar este proyecto mío, no porque sea algo complejo e innovador, sino porque estoy fuera de práctica presentando esta clase de cosas (lo hacía mucho cuando estudiaba Diseño Gráfico). Tiendo a divagar así que trataré de ser breve y consiso con esta introducción.


Hace más de 3 años, se me ocurrió ir de cafetería en cafetería, tomándome un café y dibujando mientras tanto, simplemente documentando lo que ordené para tomar y fotografiando lo que dibujé.

¿Por qué servilletas? Porque en todas las cafeterías hay servilletas a raudales (osea papel gratis ), pero realmente las elegí porque me gustó la forma en que actuaba la tinta de una sharpie punta fina en la superficie absorvente y de alta capilaridad que tienen todas las servilletas de papel.

Al principio comencé con un marcador de color negro y gradualmente me fui introduciendo en un aspecto al que siempre le rehuí a la hora de dibujar: el color.

Puedo ser muy paciente y dedicado con mis dibujos en cuanto a las lineas y tramas, pero cuando se trata de colorear, me cuesta esperar a ver los resultados finales; si por mi fuera, me gustaría chasquear los dedos y ver mi dibujo ya coloreado completamente. Evidentemente no disfruto mucho del proceso de añadir color y por eso, pintar con lápices de colores, pasteles, acrílico y demás pigmentos no va bien con mi "impaciencia cromática"; me siento más dibujante que pintor. Los marcadores de color me permitieron dibujar al mismo tiempo que le agregaba color y la servilleta como soporte favorecía que el color se expandiera más facilmente (por el principio de capilaridad) y simultáneamente aportaba una interesante textura de base (más adelante fui descubriendo y jugando con ese aspecto).

Además de saciar mi adicción a la cafeína y usar todo el stock de servilletas de los bares, también pude explorar un aspecto sobre el cual ya he manifestado mi interés: los derechos de autor y la posibilidad de un artista de desprenderse por completo de su obra. Y descubrí que es tan simple como dejar una servilleta dibujada en la mesa de un bar. Al principio, tuve que lidiar un poco con el hecho de saber que al comenzar a dibujar, más tarde no iba conservar conmigo el dibujo y eso quizás esté expresado en la simpleza de las primeras servilletas.

¿Para qué esforzarme tanto en un dibujo si luego iba a "abandonarlo"? En el transcurso del proyecto fui asimilando que el "abandono" del dibujo no implicaba querer menos mi obra o no brindarle el tiempo y dedicación suficiente. De hecho, un amigo me hizo notar que mis dibujos me importaban tanto como para organizar en torno a ellos toda esa "ceremonia" de la cafetería. En consecuencia, podrán apreciar una evolución pictórica entre las primeras servilletas y otras más avanzadas.

Para terminar esta corta introducción, quiero agregar que también esto es una especie de homenaje a Crist, un gran dibujante de mi ciudad de quien aprendí mucho cuando asistía a los talleres que dictaba en su atelier. Él justamente tenía la bohemia costumbre de ir a bares y ponerse a dibujar en servilletas, como muchos otros artistas de su generación.
